New Year’s Resolutions

I’ve been thinking a lot about goals and plans for 2019 for the last couple of months. I’ve already talked a little about growth goals for my business, though there are a lot of things I didn’t discuss, such as setting budgets for those goals. In my personal life, I wanted to set some goals as well, and make some resolutions.

The other day I was listening to the Friday Field Notes of the Order of Man podcast, titled “Buy Windshield Wipers Before it Rains.” I linked to it right there. Anyway, one of the things that caught my attention was his talking about taking care of things, his vehicle and his guns in particular. It struck me because that is not who I am, yet, and I want to be better at taking care of my things.

It’s not that I purposely go around and destroy things, I’m just not good at keeping things picked up, yet. I tend, for now, to leave things in the car with the intention of putting them away, and then two months go by and I haven’t done it yet. I should have taken a picture of my car, but it was embarrassing on Saturday.

I think this is a culmination of some events- last Wednesday I had some youth in my car for a youth activity, driving around collecting canned food. While they didn’t seem to mind the mess, I was embarrassed by it. I got to thinking about people I know and admire, wondering if their cars were ever messy. I couldn’t think of one person I admire whose car I’d been in (ok maybe there were a couple) that were as messy as mine was. And then listening to the podcast was kind of a kick in the pants, saying I need to take better care of my stuff.

So one of my resolutions is to keep up on the car- not letting trash and other stuff collect in it, but keep it clean and organized. I’m trying the same thing in my garage- trying to get things put away, clean, and organized. I take pretty good care of my firearms, but I want to make sure I keep them looking great as well. A couple of them it might be a little late (they were used already) but I think I can be better at keeping them looking good as well.

This may not seem like a big deal, but to me it is. I have a lot I need to be responsible for, and I get overwhelmed sometimes. So I am going to start small, and work on keeping the car clean, and then move to my garage, my office, and then my shop. Maybe by then I’ll be an organizing and cleaning guru!
